This intervention is for families in which the adult child is displaying harmful behaviour toward their parent/carer, elders, siblings, or other family members.
Adult to Parent Inter-Familial Abuse (APFA) seeks to address harmful behaviour displayed by the adult child (18 and over) to the parent/carer, elders, siblings, or other family members. Practitioners deliver 10 sessions using trauma and attachment theory, cognitive behavioural therapy, feminist theory, social learning theory, and non-violent resistance techniques to support the family. This long-term support is enabled through improving communication between the adult and adult child, developing empathy within the adult-child, and empowering the adult with de-escalation skills, anchoring techniques, social networks, resources, and self-care.
Alongside this, a Domestic Abuse Safety Advisor will work with the victim/survivor, using de-escalation skills and building a support network. This will ensure long-term change and ensure the victim/survivor is empowered and able to address conflict in a safe and constructive manner to reduce the risk of harm.
